Overview
Manuscript proofreading that leaves every decision with you
Proofreader is academic proofreading software that works through a research manuscript section by section, correcting errors in grammar, spelling, and punctuation and, at the High level, more actively polishing word choice, sentence flow, and academic tone. It suits researchers, graduate students, and co-author teams who want a careful language pass before a draft goes to a supervisor or journal. Upload a .docx file or the .tex files of a LaTeX project, choose the polishing level, and pick American or British spelling conventions. Sections headed References, Bibliography, or Appendix are skipped automatically. Every change is reported with the original wording, the correction, a category, and a short explanation, so you decide what stays. Proofreader is software, not a human editing service, and it does not check plagiarism, facts, or citations.
Proofread research papers
at the depth you choose.
01
Low or High polishing levels
Choose Low for a minimal-touch pass that fixes genuine errors, such as grammar, spelling, and punctuation mistakes, and leaves acceptable wording unchanged. Choose High for stronger, controlled polishing toward publication standard, including clarity, word choice, sentence flow, and academic tone. A separate English variant setting applies American or British spelling, so a scientific proofreading pass follows the convention your journal or institution uses.
02
Word documents and multi-file LaTeX projects
Upload one Word (.docx) document or the .tex files of a LaTeX project, up to 25 MB per file. A LaTeX project can include up to 50 files and 100 MB in total, so chapters split across separate files are proofread together. The manuscript is processed section by section, and headings such as References, Bibliography, and Appendix are skipped.
03
Tracked changes and a reviewable change log
Each run returns a clean corrected copy and, with Tracked Changes on, a tracked-changes version for supervisors or co-authors. In the Revision Studio you can filter edits by category or section, step through them in Focus view with before-and-after highlighting and a short reason for each change, and export the change log as a CSV file.
How it works
From draft to corrected copy
in three steps.
01
Prepare your manuscript file
Save the manuscript as a .docx file, or gather every .tex file in your LaTeX project under its original name so cross-file inputs resolve. Word and LaTeX files cannot be mixed in one run. You can upload the complete document; sections headed References, Bibliography, or Appendix are skipped automatically.
02
Set polishing options and start
Pick the Low or High polishing level, American or British English, and whether to produce tracked changes, then start the proofread. You can move to other Assistemia tools while it runs and come back when you are notified that the result is ready.
03
Review the edits and download
Work through each edit by category or section, share the tracked-changes copy with co-authors, and download the corrected document. Revert anything you disagree with in your own editor before submission, so the final wording remains your decision.
Why:Subject-verb agreement: the plural subjects "specimens" and "fatigue cracks" take plural verbs.

Proofreader results for a materials science manuscript proofread at the High level in British English: corrected and tracked-changes downloads, 57 edits grouped by category, and a subject-verb agreement correction with its explanation.
Inputs, outputs & coverage
What Proofreader reads,
returns, and skips.
Proofreader focuses on research paper proofreading in English: wording, grammar, and mechanics. Subject-matter review stays with you and your co-authors.
One Word (.docx) document, or up to 50 LaTeX (.tex) files per project. Each file can be up to 25 MB, and a LaTeX project up to 100 MB in total. PDF files are not accepted.
Output
A corrected copy in your upload format, an optional tracked-changes version, and an on-screen change report grouped by section and category that you can export as CSV.
Coverage
Grammar, spelling, punctuation, word choice, academic tone, consistency, and sentence flow, in American or British English. Sections headed References, Bibliography, Works Cited, or Appendix are skipped.
Limitations
Edits are AI-generated and can occasionally change meaning or technical terminology, so review each one. Proofreader does not check plagiarism, facts, citations, or AI-written text, and it is not a substitute for peer review.
Try Proofreader on a short manuscript or an opening section. Each Free run covers up to 800 words counted from the start of the document, and the returned files end at that point with a notice. Monthly usage is limited.
Can I proofread a LaTeX paper split across multiple .tex files?
Yes. Upload every .tex file in the project together: up to 50 files and 100 MB in total, with each file up to 25 MB. Proofreader works through each file section by section, writes a corrected .tex file and, with tracked changes on, a tracked .tex file for each one, and updates \input references so the corrected files point to each other. Keep the original file names, because cross-file references depend on them. Only .tex files are accepted, so bibliography, image, and style files stay with you.
What kinds of edits does the proofreader make?
That depends on the polishing level. Low is a minimal-touch pass that fixes genuine errors and leaves acceptable wording alone. High applies stronger, controlled polishing toward publication standard, so you will see more word-choice, sentence-flow, consistency, and academic-tone edits. Each edit is labeled with a category and a short explanation. The tool is designed for manuscript proofreading at the language level, not for restructuring arguments or adding content, so review technical terms and discipline-specific phrasing yourself before accepting the result.
Does Proofreader produce tracked changes for co-authors?
Yes, when the Tracked Changes setting is on, which is the default. Alongside the clean corrected copy, you receive a tracked-changes version in the same format as your upload: a Word document with tracked revisions, or tracked .tex files for a LaTeX project. Turn the setting off if you only need the corrected copy. You can also export the change log as a CSV file listing the file, section, category, original text, correction, and explanation for each edit.
Which parts are proofread, and how much does the Free plan cover?
Sections headed References, Bibliography, Works Cited, Appendix, and similar titles are skipped; the rest of the manuscript is proofread. On the Free plan, each run covers up to 800 words counted from the start of the document (for a LaTeX project, across the .tex files in file-name order), the corrected and tracked files end at that point with a notice, and the results page shows how many words were in scope. Premium proofreads the full document. A Free-plan result does not expand after upgrading, so rerun the manuscript on Premium.
